SAYA! reaches out to South Asian youth through a range of programs at its youth center in Queens, and through services offered at New York City public high schools.

Our Center-Based Services provide a safe place for youth to engage in a variety of activities, express and discuss their issues and a community where they can connect with other youth who share their experiences.

Our Center-Based Services include the following:

Leadership & Organizing
Programs in this area are designed to develop leadership skills and increase awareness of and opportunities for youth activism through community education. Our two major programs are:

a) ARISE: A co-ed youth organizing program where youth assess needs and issues facing the community and develop strategies to address them.
b) Desi Girls on 'da Rise: A girls only leadership development program that addresses the barriers to South Asian girl's development and ways to overcome those barriers.

Academic Preparation
In this program, youth are given tools to navigate an educational system and workplace that often alienate immigrant youth. The academic services we provide consist of SAT and Regents Preparation, One-On-One tutoring, ESL/Peer Mentoring and College Guidance.

Employment Training
Our employment training program, 'Step Ahead', provides basic computer instruction, resume writing and interviewing skills, and job placement assistance. The program aims to find youth meaningful employment positions and exposing them to various careers by diversifying the types of jobs they are placed in.

Safe Space Program and Sports Activities
Our Safe Space Program Awaaz consists of mini courses, drop-in workshops and one time events to give youth the opportunity for realizing and developing their talents. Additionally, through sports activities SAYA! provides an open-court for both boys and girls to play sports after school. SAYA! also organizes tournaments and sports days throughout the year that give young people who are otherwise not attracted to sports the opportunity to be introduced to it and have fun.

SAYA!'s School-Based services support youth in their efforts to: communicate better with teachers and guidance counselors, develop leadership skills, know their rights, access services, advocate for themselves, and succeed in school.

Our School-Based services include:

  • Counseling and advocacy for individual students
  • Discussion groups for young women
  • Leadership training
  • Parent support
  • Cultural competency training for school personnel
